About the IowaWORKS Mobile Workforce Center
Welcome to the IowaWORKS mobile workforce center, a 32-foot long American Job Center on wheels designed to make it easier than ever for Iowans to access needed workforce services. The mobile workforce center includes many of the great services available in our physical IowaWORKS locations β but this time weβre coming to meet Iowans where they are to support their careers.
IowaWORKS recently took delivery of our custom-built bus, and we plan to be traveling the state throughout 2024 and beyond. The mobile unit has 10 computer workstations where IowaWORKS staff will be able to assist with job searches and navigating unemployment claims, just as they currently do in one of the 18 IowaWORKS locations throughout Iowa. Staff also will be able to use two 40-inch monitors to lead job search workshops or hiring fairs β including one mounted on the outside of the vehicle.
The goal is to both expand the reach of Iowaβs workforce-related programs and speed up the response in situations where there are large layoffs in a particular town. In times of crisis, IowaWORKS staff will use the mobile unit as a rapid response tool to assist impacted workers. In calmer times, staff intend to use the mobile unit to visit communities farther removed from one of the existing centers.
βThe pandemic caused us to rethink how we serve people across the board,β says Michelle McNertney, Division Administrator for Workforce Services at Iowa Workforce Development. βThis is another great tool for our toolbox. It adds flexibility and a new way to reach people who are not currently taking advantage of the wide variety of resources and services available through the IowaWORKS centers .β
