Description

Fremont County, Iowa, has a long and notable history dating back to its establishment in 1847. Named after military officer John C. Frémont, the county had a population of 6,605 according to the 2020 census, making it the seventh-least populated county in the state. Sidney serves as both the county seat and its largest city. Over the years, Fremont County has faced significant natural disasters, including the 2019 Midwestern floods and a severe hailstorm in April 2025. Historically, the county was considered a swing area in presidential elections prior to 1944, but it has since become a stronghold for the Republican Party. The Fremont County Historical Society remains central to preserving and sharing the county’s heritage through its museums, archives, and educational programs.
