Description

Located along the Upper Iowa River in northeast Iowa, Howard County is where community pride was invented. Visit the home of Dr. Norman Borlaug, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and known as "The Father of the Green Revolution," "Agriculture's Greatest Spokesperson" and "The Man Who Saved a Billion Lives." Visit the Hayden Prairie State Preserve, home to more than 200 plant species, 100 species of wildflowers, 46 species of birds and over 20 species of butterflies. Each city within Howard County has a summer festival and Snowfest is celebrated in January. Howard is home to Iowa's first county-wide farmer's market. Miles of bike trails, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, off-road trails, hiking, dirt track racing, golf courses and hunting and fishing areas provide nonstop opportunities.
