Description

Founded in 1837, Buchanan County was named after United States President, James Buchanan. Home to the Hazleton Old Order Amish settlement, Buchanan County has an estimated population of 1,200 Amish. The Wapsipinicon River is a hot spot that provides a great place to boat, fish, kayak or canoe. Off the river is the Wapsipinicon Mill Museum, a six-story mill built in 1870. Other attractions include the Independence State Mental Hospital, Cedar Rock State Park and Iowa's Largest Frying Pan, sitting 14 feet tall and weighing over 1,200 pounds. Every July 4, there is a large celebration in Independence.
