Note: Dallas County: Iowa’s 150th Home Base Iowa Community
Dallas County is proud to be officially recognized as the 150th Home Base Iowa (HBI) community, with six designated HBI cities leading the way in supporting Veterans and military families:
Adel
Grimes
Urbandale
Van Meter
Waukee
West Des Moines
From employment connections to community support and outdoor adventure, Dallas County offers an exceptional quality of life for those who have served.
Description
Founded on January 13, 1846, and named after U.S. Vice President George M. Dallas, the county has grown from early settlements along the Raccoon River into one of Iowa’s fastest‑growing regions. The original county seat of “Penoach” (renamed Adel in 1849) once served stagecoach travelers heading west. Today, that same spirit of movement and opportunity thrives across communities like Adel, Waukee, Perry, Van Meter, and beyond.
As part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metro, Dallas County blends small‑town charm with metro‑level amenities—offering excellent schools, short commute times, and unmatched access to trails, parks, and natural areas.
Dallas County encompasses all or part of the following cities - Adel, Booneville, Bouton, Clive, Dallas Center, Dawson, DeSoto, Dexter, Granger, Grimes, Linden, Minburn, Perry, Redfield, Urbandale, Van Meter, Waukee, West Des Moines, and Woodward.
Whether you're visiting for the day or looking for a place to call home, you'll love all that Dallas County has to offer!

Van Meter
Van Meter, Iowa, is a small but historically rich community located in Dallas County, just west of Des Moines along the Raccoon River. Laid out in 1869 and incorporated on December 29, 1877, its name honors Jacob Rhodes Van Meter and his family—Dutch settlers from Meteren, Netherlands—who helped establish the town. The area, originally part of larger surrounding townships, was formally organized as Van Meter Township in January 1869, reflecting its growth from early pioneer settlements. In addition to its agricultural roots and classic Midwestern small-town character, Van Meter is notable today as the site of the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, which opened in 2008 and serves as the state’s first federally funded, state-operated veterans cemetery—hosting Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies and providing burial options for eligible veterans and their families.
In Van meter, incentives include:
$250 building permit credit voucher which can be applied towards future permits for items such as decks, garages, finishing basements, or building additions.
$250 utility account credit
